Frequently Asked Questions

No, our fixed wireless towers are land-based, and about as tall as the average cell phone tower, so clouds or rain won’t interfere with the signal, and the signal covers a shorter range, so a storm in the next state will have no effect on your service.

Yes, but our lite packages are subject to our AUP / FUP. If you want unlimited access without thresholds checkout our unlimited range.

No,EM-i.t is a Fixed wireless ISP. This means we install a internet connection at the one particular premises where you are. The CPE ( customer premises equipment ) a.k.a “Dish” or “antenna” ) points towards our nearest High site ( Tower) where your internet is then routed onto our 1Gbps fibre connection to the world wide web.

No, EM-i.t uses a CPE ( customer premises equipment ) to beam a signal ( radio waves) in the 5Ghz frequency to our nearest  High site.

File downloads / transfer – Kilo Bytes per second (KB/s), Line Speeds – Download / Upload – Megabits per second (Mbps)

1 byte = 8 bits (speed) ** 1000 bytes = 1KB

Reason for Math: 1Mbps line speed divide by 8bits = 125KB/s

384Kbps / 8 = 48KB/s

512Kbps / 8 = 64KB/s

1000Kbps aka 1Mbps / 8 = 125KB/s

2000Kbps aka 2Mbps / 8 = 250KB/s

4000Kbps aka 4Mbps / 8 = 500KB/s

6000Kbps aka 6Mbps / 8 = 750KB/s

8000Kbps aka 8Mbps / 8 = 1MB/s

10000Kbps aka 10Mbps / 8 = 1.25MB/s

Improve Indoor Signal

Most people hide their routers because they’re unsightly or in the way, but placing a router in a closet or in a cabinet is a one-way ticket to slow Wi-Fi: Walls and doors can degrade and absorb signal strength. Find a central location in your home and put your router on a table or bookshelf. Because some routers are designed to project a Wi-Fi signal slightly downward, keeping it higher off the ground will evenly distribute a Wi-Fi signal throughout your home.

Microwaves, cordless telephones, flourescent lights, and even other routers in your neighbor’s home or apartment may interfere with your Wi-Fi signal. To reduce interference, place your router away from household appliances and set it to a different wireless channel and frequency. Using online tools—Acrylic Wi-Fi for Windows and AirGrab Wi-Fi Radar for Mac, for example—can help you find the right wireless channel with the least amount of interference. If you want an easier fix, most routers have an automatic option to find the best channel for your location. You should also avoid placing your router near metal objects, which can absorb signal strength.

It sounds simple enough, but a majority of tech support problems can be cleared up by simply resetting or rebooting your router or modem on a regular basis. (It’s also probably the first thing your Internet provider will ask you to do when you call to complain, so head them off at the pass.)Yes, we know—running firmware updates is annoying and time consuming. But if you have an older router, those updates ensure your router’s software is running at its best and most efficient. And remember: It’s best to buy a new router every seven or eight years.

Most routers have two adjustable antennas on top. If yours are parallel, it’s time to switch things up and go perpendicular. Wi-Fi works best when signals are parallel to a device’s internal antenna, which are horizontal in laptops and vertical in desktop computers. Internal antennas vary in mobile devices, depending on how you’re holding them (in portrait or landscape mode). Keeping a router’s antennas perpendicular to each other will ensure a solid connection between your home network and your smartphones and laptops.

Because home Wi-Fi speeds are (slightly) dependent on how many people are using it at one time, a strong password is key: It will ensure that only authorized people are using your network. Take advantage of the security already built into your router and select a password (or better yet, a passphrase) that is a hard-to-figure-out combination of letters, numbers, and symbols.

If too many people on your home network are using heavy bandwidth at the same time, like playing online video games, watching Netflix, and downloading movies and music from iTunes, then your entire network will slow down for everyone. Try to stagger heavy Internet use to make sure your home network is running fast and smooth for all users.

Most routers have a range of about 45 metres. If you live in a big house, devices and computers in rooms farthest away from your router might have a hard time connecting to your home Wi-Fi network. The easiest fix to boost the signal in those rooms is to buy a Wi-Fi repeater, which can plug into any wall outlet and will increases a signal’s range and strength to the farthest parts of your home (with a corresponding decrease in internet speed for those connecting to the extender, but you can’t have everything). If you’re feeling more ambitious (or cheap), you can turn an old router into a Wi-Fi repeater with a little bit of programming and hacking.

Network Questions

please be honest about anything that might have happened before which may have caused your Internet being offline, so the issue can be resolved faster.

  • Switch off /on (1-minute period) the main plug where the Antenna adapter gets it power from.
  • Switch off all routers/extenders, after the Antenna has been powered up again then only turn the other devices back on.
  • Check if all cables are routed to their correct ports. Cable from Antenna to be routed to the “PoE” port on the adapter, from the “Lan” port on the adapter a cable runs to your desktop PC or a Wi-Fi router.
  • If all fails, contact our technical support.
  • Please take note these are factors that could slow down/ hog your internet bandwidth – Windows updates, Synchronizing software like OneDrive, Dropbox, Skype or Anti-Virus software updates & scanning. Malware or virus infected devices.
  • If your Internet browser like Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Opera Mini has added extensions or adware and popups all over the browser, these slow down your normal internet browsing and everything else related to internet speed.
  • If you are streaming on Youtube is slow, take into consideration if your Internet Browser is not infected with adware, someone else on your network is download big files, uTorrent is running in the background or windows updates/anti-virus updates.
  • Note, streaming of HD videos require at least a 4Mbps – 10Mbps line speed.
  • Note, Streaming Movies or Series without buffer requires 6Mbps – 10Mbps line speed.
  • Downloading issues with torrents.
  • Slow video Streaming with less than 6Mbps line speed.
  • Social networking (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) videos slow.
  • Your mobile device or any external device (Xbox, PS4, Cell Phone, Tablet, Laptop) not connecting to your Wi-Fi Router.
  • Network/USB connected Printer not printing.
  • Power fails at your premises that causes configurations settings of devices to reset.
  • Internet Slower, when you are being throttled.
  • Any Login issues onto social media.
  • Trouble connecting to Wi-Fi router after you have changed your Wi-Fi password.
  • Changing your Wi-Fi password after our technicians have already showed you how to do it.
  • Speed test from our distribution Tower to your antenna 100% but your Wi-Fi is slow which could indicate other internal issues with your router or devices doing software / Windows Updates in the background.

When performing a speed test, you should know there are many factors, which can distort the results. To ensure you receive the most accurate results, you should apply these cardinal rules by following the below steps.

1. Choose a speed test Service that allows ample bandwidth to their speed test        servers. For example http://www.speedtest.net/?noflash=1  Or  http://beta.speedtest.net/ and change your server to Cape Town. Or, http://openspeedtest.com/

2. On the test itself, make sure you test with the closest server to your physical  location. For example, if you live in Paarl / Wellington it would be better to select a  Cape Town server than a Johannesburg one. The server with the shortest latency &  appropriate bandwidth will yield the most accurate results.

3. Make sure your computer is connected via a Network cable and NOT with Wi-Fi. This is to help ensure no other devices or people on your local network are using bandwidth while you perform the test.

3. Triple check you have no other programmes or unnecessary processes running in  the background, such as windows updates, iTunes, Streaming services, Dropbox or antivirus. These will draw bandwidth from your line while running the speed test and obscure your results.

4. Don’t forget mobile devices, too. Most smartphones auto-connect to your wireless network when they’re within range so turning on airplane mode is probably a smart idea during your test.

5. If you’re not sure if something might be using the Internet, turning it off is a safe bet during your test.

6. Remember That No Speed Test is Perfect,

minimizing the “noise” during an Internet speed test, which is what the several tips above help you do, certainly contributes to a more accurate speed test result.

Keep in mind, however, that all you’re testing with an Internet speed test is how well your current connection works between your computer or device and the testing server itself.

While this is great for a general idea of how fast (or slow) your Internet connection is, it doesn’t necessarily mean that this is the bandwidth you should always expect
